Enrolment and Place Allocation in Düsseldorf

Pre-registration for a Kita place runs through the city's official system, not through private waiting lists. Here is the order of the steps, what to prepare, and the mistakes that cost families time.

A place in Düsseldorf comes through the city, not through a house list

Nothing on this page replaces the city's own procedure. What we can do is explain the order of the steps, tell you honestly where a place is decided, and answer questions about our own centres along the way.

Start months before the date you actually need.

The system

Düsseldorf pre-registers children through the Kita-Navigator. Kitas see the interest registered with them and decide from their own capacity.

Our role

PRI & PRI KITA gemeinnützige GmbH manages and staffs day-care centres in Düsseldorf. Enquiries about our houses come to the office.

How the Kita-Navigator works

The Kita-Navigator is the city of Düsseldorf's official tool for finding and pre-registering childcare places. You create a profile, enter your preferences, and register your interest in specific Kitas. The tool is also where you can ask about currently reported free places by district.

It does not assign a place automatically, and it is not a queue in the strict sense. It is a structured way to make your interest visible to many Kitas at once, which is exactly what you want.

Create a profile

Your child's date of birth, your address, and the districts you are considering. One profile covers the whole search.

Register with several Kitas

Interest is registered per house. A single registration puts you in front of one centre, and that is rarely enough in a city this size.

Ask about free places

The tool shows currently reported availability by district. Treat it as a starting point for a call, not as a confirmed offer.

What to prepare before you register

Gather the basics before you open the tool, so the registration is one sitting rather than five. The list is short, but every item on it shapes which Kitas can actually offer you something.

Child's details

Date of birth and your registered address in Düsseldorf. Both are matched against the age bands a Kita covers.

Preferred start date

The month you actually need, not the month you hope for. Kitas plan intake around the start of the Kita year.

Districts and houses

Name the districts you would accept, then add specific Kitas you like. Two lists, both useful to whoever reads your registration.

Hours you need

A full-day place and a half-day place are two different requests. Decide the number of hours before you compare centres.

One evening with the paperwork is usually enough, provided you already know which districts you would accept and how many hours a week you need.

The common beginner mistakes

These four come up again and again in the first weeks of a search. None of them is a reason to panic; all of them cost time that could have gone into a second registration.

  • Registering with only one Kita. It feels decisive and it narrows you to a single intake decision you do not control.

    Fix: add more houses
  • Assuming that an early registration guarantees an early place. It improves your chances; it does not secure one.

    Fix: plan a fallback
  • Ignoring districts you have not heard of. A slightly longer commute can mean a considerably shorter wait.

    Fix: widen the map
  • Leaving the settling-in period out of your planning. It takes weeks and usually requires a parent to be available.

    Fix: book the time off

How offers are made

Kitas review the registrations they receive and make offers based on their own criteria and current capacity. Age band matters enormously here: a centre may have space for a three-year-old and none for a one-year-old in the same month.

When you receive an offer, you usually have a limited window to respond. Keep your contact details in the Kita-Navigator current, because an offer that cannot reach you is an offer lost.

For Families

Age band first

Under-three and over-three places are counted separately, so a house can have one and not the other. Ask which bands a centre actually runs.

Criteria, not order

Each Kita decides from its own criteria and capacity at the time. Siblings, care hours and the district's own demand all play a part.

The response window

Offers usually come with a deadline. Read it the day the message arrives, and answer inside it even if you are still deciding.

Reachable contact

Keep the email address and phone number in your profile current through the whole search, not just at registration.

If the system feels opaque, you are not alone in that. i-Punkt Familie advises parents on searching for childcare and can explain the Kita-Navigator and availability by district.

Where to get advice

The city's family advisory service, i-Punkt Familie, advises parents on searching for childcare and can explain the Kita-Navigator and availability by district. It is a public service and it exists precisely for this.

Use it before you get frustrated with the search rather than after. An adviser can tell you which districts are currently tight and which have room.

Before you search

Ask what the current reported availability looks like in the districts you would accept, so you know where to concentrate your registrations.

While you wait

Have an adviser walk you through the Kita-Navigator if the profile fields are unclear. It is faster than guessing at what a field means.

When you have questions about us

Questions about one of our houses come to our office. We can tell you what we run, how we work, and how to reach the right person.

Documents and formalities

Once a place is agreed, the Kita will ask for standard documents: identification, proof of address, vaccination records where relevant, and the forms required for the place itself.

Fees for children from age three to school entry are handled under the city's rules, and the Jugendamt is the authority behind them. Your Kita will tell you exactly what it needs. Ask early, so nothing delays the start date.

What the Kita asks for

Identification, proof of address, and vaccination records where relevant. The exact list comes from the house that offers you the place.

Who sets the fees

From age three to school entry, fees follow the city's rules, with the Jugendamt as the authority behind them. Ask the Kita for the current position.

Timelines, realistically

There is no single timeline that fits every family. A place for an older child in a district with good supply can come together within weeks. An under-three place in a popular district can take considerably longer.

Older child, district with good supply Weeks
Older child, popular district Several months
Under-three place, popular district Considerably longer
Settling-in period before the first full day Several weeks

The honest approach is to register broadly, follow up politely, and keep a backup option in mind. Our own enrolment enquiries are handled through the office; if you have a question about one of our centres, contact us and we will tell you what we can.

Questions we are asked most

Short answers to the four questions that come up before anything else. If yours is not here, the office is the fastest route.

FAQ
Can I register directly with a PRI & PRI KITA centre?

Pre-registration for Düsseldorf childcare runs through the city's Kita-Navigator. You can contact us with questions, but the formal registration goes through the city's system.

Does registering early guarantee a place?

No. Early registration improves your chances, but allocation depends on capacity and the Kita's own criteria at the time. Registering with several Kitas is the practical approach.

How do I find out if a Kita has U3 places?

Check the Kita's listing in the Kita-Navigator for the age bands it covers, and ask directly. U3 and Ü3 places are counted separately, so a centre can have one and not the other.

Who can advise me if I do not understand the process?

The city's family advisory service, i-Punkt Familie, advises parents on childcare search and can explain the Kita-Navigator and district availability.

Write or call the office during working hours, Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. If you already have a question about a specific house, say so and we will route it to the right person.
